We’ve just confirmed with the lovely people behind Lisa Hannigan’s tour that the support for her Sligo gig is the very talented Gavin Glass. Oh but we’re very excited. Not least of all because his version of Ohh la la for that deadly little Meteor ad (I want the citroen please) reminded us that Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart were once in a band together, perish the thought. Of course Gavin’s is infinitely better, and not a whiff of an aging rocker in sight.
Gavin is normally found with his Holy shakers in tow, but no word as yet whether they’ll also be making an appearance in the rather apt surrounds of Calry Church on Friday next (25th July). Gavin’s recent album is a thing of beauty, and not surprisingly has been voted CD of the week in both The Sunday Tribune and In Dublin magazines, and the often cranky but always discerning Hot Press gave it a rare (9/10) rating. The album includes a duet “Rag Doll” with lady of the moment Cathy Davey, and also features Clarence Clemons from Springsteen’s E Street Band on two songs. A bit of googling reveals that the Springsteen connection was borne out of Bruce and Clarence discovering Gavin playing his songs on the piano at the Merrion Hotel after their Irish concert last year. (guess we now know where to find Bruce when he’s in town).
Head along to Mr. Glass’ myspace for a taster, where you can even get a free download of Ohh la la- what a nice man. Of course to get the real deal you just have to head along to Lisa Hannigan’s gig in Calry Church on The Mall in Sligo (directly opposite the Model builing) on Friday 25th July. Tickets are just €15 for both the enchanting Lisa and the wonderful Mr. Glass. Both appearing courtesy of our New Spaces for Music series.
Lisa will also be playing in the Glens Centre in Manorhamilton on Saturday 26th July while she’s in the Northwest.
