Craic for Cairde

Jarlath Regan - Andrew Stanley

Jarlath Regan - Andrew Stanley

The Model’s Craic in the Box, which is being run by MC John Colleary while we’re closed, is taking part in Cairde with a gig on Saturday 11th July.  A great Festival needs a great line-up so John has invited back two of Craic’s favourites: Jarlath Regan (The Panel, RTE) and Andrew Stanley (I Dare Ya! RTE).

Having performed worldwide at the Montreal, Adelaide, Melbourne and Edinburgh Comedy Festivals and becoming a regular fixture at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, Andrew Stanley is one of the top comics working the Irish Circuit today. Whether it’s performing as Resident MC in numerous clubs around the country, one of which is the legendary Comedy Cellar in Dublin, or as a quality act in his own right Andrew is always high energy and quick witted  keeping every audience thoroughly entertained.

Jarlath Regan is the new face of RTE’s most popular comedy show “The Panel” and the fastest rising star of Irish comedy. Within two years of quiting his day job Regan’s original brand of observational humour and twisted greeting cards have made him a firm favourite among comedy anoraks.

John Colleary will be no stranger to Sligo audiences than he normally is! A compère of unrivalled panache and wit, he has been known to tell the occasional funny story and will be on hand to ensure your comfort and enjoyment on the night.

Tickets are still just €10 and can be purchased in advance from Cairde by calling: 071 – 917 0431, or you can take your chance on the door from 9.30pm. Gig stars at 10pm and goes till late with a full bar- upstairs in McGarrigles.

cat laughs delivers special sligo guest

The deeply serious and hotly contested comics football match

Just back from a weekend in Kilkenny for the 14th Smithwicks Cat Laughs Comedy Festival which once again delivered the laughs, and this time out also helpfully delivered the surprise guest MC for this month’s Craic in the Box in the shape of the wonderfully funny Mr. Adam Hills. So to our great delight we now have 2 international comedic superstars for you on one bill in Sligo on June 13th, with irish rising star Neil Hickey providing the support.

Outside of twisting comics arms to appear in Sligo I managed to catch a few gigs while I was in the Marble City with Craig Hill, Arj Barker, Lee Mack, David O’Doherty, Reuben and the specially reformed Mr. Trellis (where Kevin Gildea, Ardal O’Hanlon and Barry Murphy took us on a trip to the ’80s, with a special rendition of My Lovely Horse that should surely end on youTube if all is right with the world) providing the laughs.

As with any year that the sun decides to shine one of the weekend highlights was the comics football match, with winning commentary from Karl Spain and Fred McAuley. Gratuitous tackles on girls aside, it was a fun affair with Ireland easily beating the Rest of the World 3-2.

summer laughs

Danny Bhoy

Wasn’t our summer just lovely? Hot and balmy and the best of the weather in the West, just how we like Iit. Short of course, only about 10 days long, but you can’t have everything.

June is coming crashing toward us bringing with it a Scotsman of seriously sunny disposition for his second Craic headline slot on Friday 13th June. The very cosmopolitan and supremely charming Danny Bhoy  will be making a whole host of trips to Ireland this summer kicking off with the Kilkenny Cat Laughs this coming weekend and the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival in July, but if you can’t make it to Kilkenny  or Dublin fear not, we’re bringing Danny right here to Sligo for your local laughing pleasure.

“Scotland’s Danny Bhoy is impressive. His simple observations are delivered with hilarious punch lines and he creates a remarkable intimacy with his audience. A must-see.”
The Age, Australia

This guy is the real deal and I’m not sure how else to say it. He has a list of accolades as long as my two arms joined together (nice thought), he is undeniably professional, totally charming, smart and witty and crafts proper stories and anecdotes.  He’s funny without being crass but not so goody-goody that you want to poke his eyes out, always a good thing in my book.  I’ve said lots of other nice things about him on our lovely new comedy page  and what I haven’t said is that he will be joined by an equally endearing support act, and a guest MC yet to be announced (John Colleary has escaped this month; time off for good behaviour)

If you can make it to Kilkenny or Dublin there is no point in checking Danny out (given that he’ll be right here very soon and for a far more reasonable ticket price) but you could seek out Arj Barker, Reginald D. Hunter and Josie Long in Kilkenny, and Louis CK, Reggie WattsStephen K Amos, Reggie WattsPhil Nichol, or Reggie Watts in Dublin in July. (yes, I do like one of these comics more than all the others.) Outstanding.
